Lisa and the Devil1974

  • 3.5
Regarded as Mario Bava's most personal and unconventional film, LISA AND THE DEVIL is a diabolical thriller flavored with the dreadful imagery and tormenting logic of an endless nightmare. Elke Sommer stars as a tourist in Spain who, upon seeing the image of a bald, grinning devil in an ancient fresco, wanders away from her group and finds herself drawn into a confounding labyrinth of mystery, lured even deeper by a mysterious figure who may in fact be the fresco's Satan made flesh.

Ignorant philistines. Lisa and the Devil is a lyrical masterpiece of dark romanticism. Apparently, Fandor's customers have eroded their thinking abilities with the site's glut of left-wing documentaries. There's a lesson to be learned: one should steer clear of women reviewers with cutesy monikers like "ladyscorpio." (Damn that Mrs. Pankhurst.) The only thing "craptacular" here is the stupidity of the people on this page. What a waste of HTML.

More concerned with setting a surreal and nightmarish mood and style than with telling a linear story. Even after the resolution, a lot doesn’t make sense, but it’s one masterful, creepy movie with lots of scares, atmospheric scenes and lighting as well as shocking sudden violence. Leave logic at the gate and hold on for a scary and disturbing ride.

Surreal and captivating. Lisa and the Devil plays like some half-remembered fever dream, a twisted, disturbing nightmare that only makes realistic sense some of the time. This is far and away Mario Bava's most brilliant technical work, utilizing with subtle precision all of his famous techniques consistently throughout this hallucinatory gothic horror. However, it is certainly not for the uninitiated, nor is it for anyone outside of a few niche categories. The cinephiles, the lovers of the great Italian masters, the Bava completionists. All others should be warned that this dark and unsettling masterpiece is more song, more poem, more painting than just a movie. The audience is left not with more questions than answers, but stuttering, unable to form coherent questions at all. Perhaps, however, there is one question one can ask of this movie, and perhaps it is the most important of all: how did Sophia light that cigarette without setting her veil on fire?

This is one of the most colorful and devastating horror films I've ever seen. The brutality strikes much harder on a second viewing. We are all lucky to have it.

I was watching the left wing documentaries too much to really appreciate this film. Signed philistine at heart.

Mario Bava is most prominently known for 'Black Sunday', an earlier work. This one is different, it has a lot of dream like qualities to it. There are times when certain characters are dreaming or awake, and you can't quite tell. The synopsis pretty much tells you everything you need to know. Not a bad film at all really.

What a waste of film stock!

One of those Italian spooky-house horror flicks --abundantly false-eyelashed young woman is stranded in an Italian villa or palazzo or castel where various occult/paranormal/spooooky things go on. Promisingly, it's directed by Italian horror master Mario Bava, starring Telly Savalas as the Devil. Sounds good, doesn't it? Well, it's not.
