In the Folds of the Flesh1970

  • 3.2
  • passes the bechdel test
In a genre defined by shocking violence and psychosexual kink, it remains perhaps the most over-the-top "giallo" in EuroCult history: former MGM starlet and doomed James Dean paramour Pier Angeli (two decades past her Golden Globe award for "Most Promising Newcomer" and just one year before her tragic death) star in this ultra-lurid epic packed with decapitations, pet vultures, creepy incest, groovy fashions, cyanide baths, swirly psychedelics, inexplicable plot twists, Nazi death camp flashbacks and more. Eleonora Rossi Drago, Fernando Sancho and Luciano Catenacci co-star in the 1970 sickie that would make Sigmund Freud himself scream in horror. Unfortunately, IN THE FOLDS OF THE FLESH is presently only available with an English-dubbed dialogue track. [Dubbing is generally avoided whenever possible (though not an option in this particular instance).]

In a genre that is full of crazy plots, IN THE FOLDS OF THE FLESH still accounts for one of the most twisted storylines. There probably isn't a single scene in this production that makes the slightest bit of sense, however, as a whole this is a deliciously bonkers sleazeball giallo about one of the most dysfunctional families in cinematic history. Can't really go wrong with incest, rape, murder, decapitation, Nazi war crimes, bottles of J&B Whiskey and intricate colour schemes.

The kind of decent smut I thrived on when watching late night movies in my youth.

Giallo, as a genre, is a coin toss: sometimes you get terror and sometimes you get terrible. “In the Folds of the Flesh” is a dutch-angle zoom shot towards the latter.

It’s a high-camp gore fest slightly to the left of“Dark Shadows,” filled with day-for-night shots, pet vultures, and rubber heads bouncing along the floor—but those are all good things! This is definitely one you save for Saturday night with some friends and a tray full of junk food.

This is a great 70' giallo, full of murder, sex, violence, double-crossing, plot twists, and psychedelia. Which for me is awesome ! If you're a fan of the genre, watch this, it will not disappoint.

One of the most tasteless films with one of the most incoherent plots this side of Andy Milligan, and also lots of fun. Worth seeing for the incestuous son's wardrobes alone, especially his floral and geometric patterned shirts and dated dopey-assed Nehru jackets.
