Hamsun1996

  • 4.1
In this epic story of love and treason, screen legend Max von Sydow (THE EXORCIST, MINORITY REPORT, HANNAH AND HER SISTERS, THE SEVENTH SEAL) gives a career-crowning performance as Knut Hamsun, Norway’s controversial Nobel Laureate. Hamsun is his country’s most beloved writer. But with the shadow of Nazism quickly darkening Europe, Hamsun and his wife Marie (Ghita Nørby) embrace Hitler, who sees Hamsun’s support as the surest way to win over the Norwegian people. Before long Hamsun and Marie are engulfed not only in Hitler’s war, but also in their own turbulent relationship, and must face the angry wrath of a betrayed nation.

First rate acting all around not to mention Max's virtuoso performance. Told a history of the Norwegian involvement in and during WWII and Knut Hamsun's journey through it all.

Max Von Sydow at his best...

Shows that surprising element of stubbornness to be found in some of his books, like "Hunger," for instance - but with pathos!

Outstanding performance by Max von Sydow -- the greatness of the poet comes through -- and the rest of the cast are excellent. If Knut Hamsun could see the world today, he would know how right he was about so many things. He fell into the hands of devils after the war, as has much of the planet. An extraordinary story.
